My short film on the dangers of texting and driving. A persuasive story of bondage and its deceptive power. Merely trying to pull free will only tighten the noose that binds you - you must cut the noose off! Silencing your mobile device is an effective way to free your self from distractions.

My submission for the Drive Smart Teen Contest, hosted by the CTIA Wireless Foundation.

Q: What is the most important message you want to convey?
A: A distraction is anything that takes away one's focus and attention from a predetermined task or object. Texting and driving is just that - this distraction steals one's focus off driving and engulfs the mind into a virtual conversation. One must realize that he's not only playing with his life but also the lives of those around him when he decides to allocate a portion of his attention elsewhere. Trying to pull free from what's distracting you only tightens the noose around you. To be truly set free, you must first cut the noose that binds you. That's why I built my message on silencing your distraction. Silencing your mobile device effectively cuts your attention from text messages, phone calls, and other notifications vying for your awareness.

Q: Why do you think your Drive Smart Digital Short will make a difference with teens?
A: My Drive Smart Digital Short draws parallels in order to illustrate the dangerous and deceptive nature of texting and driving. I believe my audience will be captivated by two very different scenarios playing out along side each other. The parallel isn't easily noticeable at first, but that mystery is what keeps the teenagers wondering and watching. By the time the parallel is determined, the pace speeds up to the point where the content gets increasingly suspenseful, retaining the teens' attention as they can't wait to see what happens.

Q: How did you come up with the idea for your entry?
A: I watched all the past winners' entries as an avenue of inspiration and a feel for what could be expected of my entry. Each conveyed a good message, but the majority of entries appeared to go along the lines of the generic "Don't text and drive; it's bad." Only a few impressed me, and what impressed me was the unique execution of both the content and message. I wanted to spread a specific, meaningful message - one that would catch the attention of teens and delcare a call to action. I flipped through my journal for inspiration and stumbled upon a message on bondage. Instantly, I connected the dots and discovered the correlation. Distractions, such as texting and driving, keep you longer than you want to stay due to their attention-sapping power by nature. In time, however, such distractions will cost you more than you ever thought you'd pay. In the case of texting and driving, you may very well pay with someone's life. In sum: bondage.
