Hate, hostility, prejudice – for many Muslims in Germany, this is everyday life. Max (21) also experiences fear of Islam: "Islam is still equated with terrorism," he says. As a convert, he feels under particular scrutiny. Max decided to live with Allah and the Quran at the age of 17 and has had to live with Islamophobia ever since. Toya von Datteltäter also converted to Islam. She doesn't wear a headscarf. In our video, she explains why she doesn't consider herself a liberal Muslim.

🕋⛪🕍⛩️ Why convert?

For Max, it clicked when he talked to refugee children. He was impressed by their strong faith and quickly decided to convert. Now, for the first time, he feels truly at home and a sense of belonging to the people in his mosque community. Toya, on the other hand, questioned the Christian religion even as a child: Father, Son, Holy Spirit – it didn't make sense to her. What does Islam offer her? Answers to all her questions, she says.

🕌 How does the conversion process work?

According to Islamic belief, one is a Muslim if one believes and testifies to it. In practice: It is sufficient to recite the Muslim declaration of faith – usually in the presence of witnesses. It's impossible to say exactly how many people in Germany convert to Islam each year. They are not registered because, unlike Christians, they don't pay church tax. In 2015, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) very roughly estimated the number at between 10,000 and 100,000.

🕋 Converts and Radicalization
Especially in connection with the rise of the so-called Islamic State (IS), there has been much reporting in Germany about radicalized Muslims. It is striking that the biographies of radicalized converts have appeared disproportionately often in the media. This has created the impression that converted Muslims are prone to radicalization. However, this is not statistically proven. For example, the North Rhine-Westphalia Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Verfassungsschutz NRW) reports that in 2015, approximately 10 percent of 8,000 Salafists were converts.
