Trailcam – Season 2: Episode 16
Trailcam is the new moniker of Toronto-based artist Rita Mikhael, who up until recently had been releasing cutting-edge, club-driven explorations under the name E-Saggila for nearly a decade. Her new project made its debut with a stellar EP of dubbed-out downtempo cuts titled 'Drumlin Loop', which dropped on the influential Swedish label Northern Electronics in July of this year. Though we were initially mourning the shelving of her luminous E-Saggila project, 'Drumlin Loop' proved itself a worthy shift in direction. The sound is notably paired down, though perhaps evermore engaging, signaling a matured sense of palette and world-building that comes from her confidence in restraint. In that way, it shares kinship with some of the best of artists like Maurizio, Andy Stott, and Sandwell District.
Her set on this week's edition of CENTER BOOTH expands on the lush sounds of 'Drumlin Loop', several tracks from which appear here, although sped up slightly in order to weave themselves into the otherwise relaxed pace of a dub techno set. It's a divinely textural listening experience, both beautiful in its intricacy, and ominous in its tone. Soft, hissing noise and shimmering, dubby synths are undercut by thick, rumbling basslines, its unassuming pace belying the force of its rhythm. Here, Trailcam seems to find a home in her new sound, and we're beyond thrilled that she came by to share it with us.
