The medicinal values of fresh water soft-shell turtle soup is world renowned and not limited to the Chinese. It is said to lower cholesterol, detox the body, improves kidney functions, manages menopause and most of all boosts virility! In England this was a popular delicacy serving back in the 1750's, while in the US there was even canned soft-shell turtle soup by Campbell's back in the 1920's. All these led to over-hunting and now it is a restricted delicacy permitted only at commercially cultivated ponds and sellers.
This video takes you to century-old food stalls at the market in Kuala Pilah that are licensed to serve soft-turtle soup. The video visits the Ming Kee stall which is now run by a third generation. And so are their customers, many are third generations. To suit customer's taste these stalls also serve beef innards soup (nyow lum).
