Just like having a supportive community is important for human happiness, it appears that community and diversity is equally important for gut bacteria to protect against pathogens.
A University of Oxford study demonstrated that when gut bacteria communities were cultured together that pathogens were 1000 times less likely to grow when there was a diverse microbiome composition.
