Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy – How Does It Work?
Atmospheric air contains 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, and 1% of a mixture of other gases. Under physiological conditions, 97.5% of the oxygen delivered to the lungs is bound by hemoglobin, and only a small portion, representing 1%, is transported free, dissolved in blood plasma. The medical gas used during hyperbaric oxygen therapy is 100% oxygen. The use of 100% oxygen under elevated pressure leads to an increase in oxygen tension and an increase in the alveolar-capillary oxygen gradient, which, in accordance with the laws of physics, allows for greater solubility of this gas in the patient's plasma. During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, at conditions above 2 ATA, the solubility of oxygen in plasma and other body fluids increases as much as 14-fold, allowing for high oxygenation of tissues and cells throughout the human body. Providing increased amounts of oxygen leads to the activation of a number of health-promoting processes at the physiological, tissue, cellular and molecular levels.
