Finds: Part 1, Original Technical Petroleum Jelly from the 50s
In the "Doooooobligatory" section, we'll be sharing interesting artifacts, spare parts, and other items from the good old past, the USSR, and beyond. We'll also tell you what parts we select for our cars, including modern ones. We'll also tell you where the artifacts were mined, how we managed to obtain them, and so on.
In the first episode, we'll tell you about something rare today: technical Vaseline... with a deer depicted on the can! Vaseline was invented in the 19th century by Robert Cheseborough, in 189 or something (long ago, actually). The can bore the mysterious word "petrolatum"—that's what Wikipedia says. Petrolatum (from the Middle Latin "petroleum"—oil) is a complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained by dewaxing petroleum oils. It consists primarily of saturated crystalline and liquid hydrocarbons, with carbon content predominantly greater than C25.[1] It's a viscous, light-brown mass with a dropping point of 55-65°C and a flash point of 230-255°C. Wow, Comrades!!! So Vaseline is a very interesting substance.
