The ancient Norse "berserker," the Malay-Indonesian "amok," or the ancient Greek "lyussa"—fierce outbursts of aggression—still command superstitious respect, an intoxicating force that bursts forth and can sweep away anything in its path. Only a culture that distills this immature, often dangerous, fervor into creative energy can harness this force. And the foundation of this process are rituals, rites of passage—initiations.
