Here in Galicia, Spain there are a LOT of 'palilleiras,' or lacemakers! These lacemakers all belong to a lace guild in the province of A Coruña in Galicia and gather to work together and chit-chat.
Lacemaking has been a huge part of the culture and community where we live here on the Costa da Morte for several hundred years. You can watch lace being made all along the coast by lacemakers who continue to sell their precious lace to collectors, fashion designers, locals, and tourists.
Most of the women in the guild started learning lace when they were 4 and 5 years old. They learned from their mothers, grandmothers, and aunties. Lace orders would come in for the guild and everyone would gather to work on the orders together and pass the time chit-chatting. (In this video you can hear the ladies speaking in Gallego about the upcoming schedules!)
