Plants vs. Zombies is a tower defense video game developed and published by American studio PopCap Games for Windows and OS X on May 5, 2009. It was subsequently ported to consoles, handheld gaming systems, and mobile devices. Before establishing itself as a standalone game, Plants vs. Zombies was originally developed by game designer George Fan as a sequel to Insaniquarium.
In Plants vs. Zombies, the player assumes the role of a homeowner whose house is regularly attacked by zombies from a nearby cemetery. To defend the house from the zombies, the player must plant plants that damage or otherwise harm the advancing enemies. As the level progresses, the player collects "sun" units, which, when acquired, allow the player to plant a specific plant. Zombies approach the house along several parallel lines on the lawn near the house, requiring the player to plant plants on all of these lines. If even one zombie reaches the end of its line, the level is lost.
The game received critical acclaim and was nominated for numerous awards. For example, at the 2010 Golden Joystick Awards, it won "Download Game of the Year" and "Strategy Game of the Year." Plants vs. Zombies received praise for its deliberately simple yet addictive gameplay and humorous style. Due to the game's success, it was followed by the release of several sequels. Plants vs. Zombies launched a game series of the same name, which currently includes two direct sequels (Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time and Plants vs. Zombies 3), three third-person shooters (Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville), and two spin-offs (Plants vs. Zombies Adventures and Plants vs. Zombies Heroes).
