According to legend, with such bladed weapons, berserkers pierced plate armor, cut a blade made of carbon steel.
In the manufacture of this composite steel, forge welding of stacked packages is used. That allows you to control both the artistic value of Damascus and its performance. Nickel alloys the layers of low-carbon and high-carbon steel adjacent to it. The degree of its corrosion resistance increases.
FORGING TECHNOLOGY
Unlike Bulat, which is obtained only when the steel is completely melted to add alloying elements to it that determine the properties of the blade, Damascus is made by forging bags. In this case, packages can be recruited from sheet material, wire, strips. There is a high-tech method of powder making Damascus by sintering pre-laid mosaics in an oven.
Forging technology is as follows:
individual elements inside the package are interconnected mechanically (usually by twisting) or by welding;
then the package is placed in a furnace, muffle or hearth, with coke or charcoal as fuel;
heating is carried out to a white heat - a temperature of +1350°С for low-carbon steel or a lemon-colored heat of +1150°С for high-carbon steel;
during intermediate heating up to +950°С ... +1050°С, the package is sprinkled with flux (borax, sand, mixtures in different proportions);
forging or drawing on rollers to obtain a homogeneous material.
Modern nickel Damascus knives are a technological product. At the stage of assembling the package, a wire is used, the transverse profile of which is specially set on a CNC broaching machine, for example, in the form of figures of people, animals. Nickel plates are periodically added to sheet packs to obtain white streaks and corrosion resistant properties.
At the forging stage, the packages can be stacked on top of each other longitudinally and at different angles, twisted in space a certain number of times. By analogy with how a master baristo draws latte art on the surface of coffee, a blacksmith creates patterns and ornaments on the edges of the blade.
Damascus knives with nickel steel properties are obtained depending on the characteristics of its individual components and the nature of the interaction between them in the package. Currently, it is customary to distinguish four types of Damascus by composition:
corrosion-resistant - they are also stainless, high-alloy, special equipment is required for welding, the cost is very high, and the decorative properties are low, all products are usually manufactured by the Swedish manufacturer Damasteel AB;
hard-hard damascus - the package is dominated by high-carbon steels, the average percentage of carbon is 0.8 - 1%, there is little nickel and technical iron, and this is the most popular option for today;
Damascus hard-soft - the average percentage of carbon in the bag is 0.5%, the optimal combination of viscosity and hardness, self-sharpening effect, this technique is best suited for knives and daggers;
medium-carbon Damascus - spring steel is usually used, the package has an average carbon content of 0.35%, Damascus knives with nickel are obtained, rather decorative, for weeks of combat.
High-quality Damascus knives with nickel can only be obtained from steels with high cutting properties. there are restrictions on the quantity - less than 5% in volume - and the quality of alloying elements. Titanium, aluminum and chromium give dense oxide films that interfere with welding. The boundaries of the sections become noticeable only when the structure of the materials is different.
Hot deformation intervals should be close, but without the possibility of property inversion. Depending on the mutual ratio of the steel in the package, they can be light-etched and dark-etched.
