HIC - hydrogen induced cracking.
Hydrogen atoms soak into the metal and, when the atoms begin to collect at features like inclusions, they join to form hydrogen gas. Over time gas pressure builds up within the steel, splitting the steel apart.
Occurs in wet hydrogen sulfide (H2S) service.
