Happy holidays and happy new year! Sorry this devlog is a bit late, but I think I've made a decent amount of progress! In the previous indie devlog, I focused on engineering the dialogue, questing, and relationship system. Relationships with NPCs will be one of the main ways of player progression in the RPG. The other form of player progression is personal player empowerment, so basically making your personal character stronger!
Since the the last devlog, I really had to think about how the player should be able to progress through each of the systems in my indie game. As I mentioned in the third devlog, doing quests for NPCs will be the main way to develop a relationship with them. But if NPC quests also gave a lot of player XP, then the player is not really choosing which progression to go down. Therefore I drastically reduced the amount of XP NPC quests give, and instead focusing on developing the shrine system!
Shrines in my game are dedications to powerful entities, and when the player does quests for these shrines, they are rewarded with more/improved personal abilities or stats. I think this gives a unique flow to the game, where in one run you can go for purely player power or for a large NPC army.
In this devlog, I also show off the new and improved player user interface. I added a clock in the corner as well as player status bars and an actionbar! Stick to the end of the video where I ask for your advice on the current ability system in the game as I am still relatively new to indie game development and game design. In essence, what is the best way to build player abilities and skill unlocks in an indie RPG?
Comment down below any suggestions for future devlogs!
