I've noticed recently a lot of people are asking about how much capital it requires or how much it costs to start a Print on Demand business?
Whenever I tell people nothing at all, you can stat a print on demand business with $0 people are always surprised, they often say surely I have to spend money on something? The fact of the matter is you can start a print on demand business without a penny in your pocket.
I should add that there's several ways to start a POD business. I essentially break it down to three methods.
The first method and free method is going to be selling through a platform like an Amazon Merch or a Red Bubble. You simply upload your designs to their website, if those designs sell they pay you a commission. There's no need to run ads, no need to pay for a website or a shopify store and you don't even have to front the money for your customers tee shirts. I actually recommend most people start this way to prove their concept. Also if you can't sell on a platform like Amazon or Redbubble with their built in organic traffic your not gonna sell through your own website anyways.
The second method is still using a platform, one like Etsy for example, but using a fulfillment partner to make and ship your shirts. An example of this would be listing on Etsy and having your shirts made through Printful. This method doesn't require a ton of money but because Etsy only pays out once per week you will need the money to front the purchase of your customers shirt. For example Etsy customer buys shirt from you for $20. Shirt costs $15 through Printful, you need to pay Printful the $15 and have the shirt sent to your customer and at the end of the week Etsy will pay you $20, $15 of which covers the cost of the product and $5 of which is your profit. I would recommend having at least enough money to cover the sale of a few shirts, but this method doesn't require a ton of money.
Lastly we have opening up your own store. I personally use Shopify, however you could use BigCommerce, Big Cartel, WooCommerce, etc. With this method you'll have to pay for your store, in the case of Shopify it's $29. I personally chose to use CustomCat as opposed to printful. They do have a free plan but I'll likely wind up paying for their $30 per month plan as it lowers the cost of my shirts and will make me more money in the longrun. I didn't pay for a Shopify theme, I used a free theme. The only other real expense I had was getting some mockups done through placeit which cost me $8 a pop, I wound up getting 3, I'll probably need a few more. All in all I wound up spending about $100 to launch my Shopify/CustomCat print on demand store.
Now again, this can be done for free, but even if you wanted to run your own shop this can be done cheaply and this is truly a $100 startup.
