In this tutorial, I’m taking you to one of England’s most charming and historic streets—Steep Hill in Lincoln. Famous for its cobbled slope, medieval buildings, and quaint shopfronts, it’s a location that begs for a little creative storytelling.

We’ll start with two RAW captures—one of the full Steep Hill scene and another of a lantern. I’ll show you how to carefully select, mask, and composite the lantern into the main image, before using the brand-new Harmonise feature in Adobe Photoshop (Beta 26.11) to perfectly match colour, tone, and lighting between the two sources.

From there, we’ll take the image on a full cinematic transformation: turning day into night, replacing the sky, and enhancing the atmosphere with realistic lighting effects.

Working step-by-step, you’ll see:

Initial exposure and mood refinements in Lightroom Classic.

Selecting and masking the lantern for a clean composite.

Using Harmonise to instantly balance the colour temperature and tonal depth between layers.

Performing a realistic sky replacement with improved edge blending and masking precision.

Applying my signature day-to-night edits—adding lamp glow, window light, and subtle ambient illumination for a cohesive night scene.

Final tonal shaping in Camera Raw to unify the image.

If you’ve followed my workflow before, you’ll notice how Harmonise removes the tedious manual adjustments once required for convincing composites—making the whole process faster, smoother, and more creative.

Whether you’re exploring Steep Hill for the first time or testing the latest Photoshop Beta tools, this episode is packed with techniques to elevate your composites and day-to-night edits.
