That protein bar you eat after the gym? The sugar-free dressing on your salad? The "healthy" snack your kids love? Check the label. If you see maltodextrin, you are consuming something far worse than sugar.

Maltodextrin is a white powder made from corn, rice, or wheat starch. It has a glycemic index of 95—higher than table sugar at 65. That means it spikes your blood sugar faster than pure glucose. But blood sugar is only the beginning.

Research published in Frontiers in Immunology reveals that maltodextrin suppresses the intestinal mucus layer—your gut's natural defense system. Without this protective barrier, bacteria and toxins leak directly into your bloodstream. This is leaky gut. And it triggers systemic inflammation, food sensitivities, and autoimmune reactions.

Maltodextrin also alters your microbiome. It feeds pathogenic bacteria like E. coli while starving beneficial strains. This imbalance, called dysbiosis, is linked to irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and metabolic disease. Studies on mice prone to Crohn's disease showed that maltodextrin triggered severe intestinal inflammation and damaged the cells that produce protective mucus.

The food industry loves maltodextrin because it is cheap, extends shelf life, and creates creamy texture. They put it in protein powders, infant formula, salad dressings, sauces, cereals, and diet drinks. And because it is not listed as sugar, most people never know they are consuming it.

You do not need to fear food. You do need to read labels. If maltodextrin appears in the first five ingredients, put it back on the shelf. Your gut houses 70 percent of your immune system. Stop feeding it additives designed for profit, not health.
