In this video, you’ll learn how to quickly duplicate shapes, repeat transformations, snap objects into alignment, and create evenly spaced patterns using Affinity’s built-in tools. These techniques are perfect for beginners and intermediate designers who want to work more efficiently.
We start by covering Affinity’s core duplication shortcut. After selecting any object, pressing Command + J (Mac) or Control + J (PC) instantly creates a duplicate directly on top of the original. This is the cleanest and fastest way to produce a copy — even though both shapes overlap at first, it becomes intuitive quickly.
Next, you'll see how to duplicate by dragging, one of Affinity’s most useful hidden features. Simply click and drag your object, then hold Command or Control to preview a copy that follows your cursor. Keeping the key held ensures the ghost copy stays visible until you place it. This method is perfect for visually spacing objects during layout work.
To keep objects aligned, adding Shift locks movement to clean horizontal, vertical, or diagonal lines — a great way to avoid subtle misalignment that becomes noticeable later.
Finally, you’ll learn the most powerful part: repeating the same transformation automatically. After placing your first duplicated object, pressing Command/Control + J again makes Affinity repeat that exact move — perfect for building rows of icons, shapes, grids, or patterns instantly. This is the Affinity version of Illustrator’s “duplicate transform,” and it keeps spacing perfectly consistent.
Whether you're designing logos, patterns, UI elements, or illustrations, these duplication tricks will dramatically improve your speed and accuracy.
