SLA 3D printing has a reputation for making weak, brittle parts—but today’s materials are pushing the boundaries, resulting in parts that match and even surpass the mechanical properties of common FDM materials like PLA, PETG, and ABS. To expand your 3D printing capabilities, consider SLA 3D printing.
In this drop test, we used a 15 lb (6.8 kg) weight and brackets printed in different materials on FDM and SLA 3D printers.
-FDM: PLA, PETG, ABS (commonly used but anisotropic, meaning they’re weaker along certain directions)
-SLA: Formlabs Grey Resin and Tough 2000 Resin, printed on Form 4
Spoiler alert: FDM 3D prints are anisotropic, so they all fractured at the drop test. SLA parts didn’t.
