I’ve always been fascinated with the songwriting process. Sometimes when you sit down to write a song, it’s fully realized in your head. You already know within minutes of composting the basic ideas of the track what it’ll sound like once it’s recorded and pressed on record. Other times, songs take a crazy journey, starting out completely different than what will be eventually released. Such is the case with “Secrets”. The original idea of the song, which I wrote with Kris Rodgers, was called “Two To Groove”, and it sounded like a 90’s pop song, a la “Steal My Sunshine” by Canadian Pop duo LEN. We actually wanted to get the original Sugar Ray DJ, DJ Homicide on the track to do some vinyl scratching! Thankfully, this song took a direction for the better once we met up with our good friend Jeff Beam, who recorded all the guitars on this one. Once he fired up his Vox amp and plugged in his Rickenbacker, the tune shifted back into more familiar territory. We changed the lyrics, and the song title to “Secrets”, and tried to give it a Big Star meets Motown vibe. James Jamerson is my favorite bass player, which is pretty apparent on the bass line I laid down for this - which is the soul and backbone of the track.
