Theory

A capacitor is an electronic component that stores energy in an electric field when connected to a power source. It charges when connected to a voltage source and discharges when the source is removed.
1. Charging: When the circuit is completed by closing the switch, the capacitor begins to charge. The voltage across the capacitor gradually increases until it equals the battery voltage. During charging, the current decreases over time.
• LED Behavior: The charging process can be observed by the glow of one LED. The brightness of the LED decreases as the capacitor charges.

2. Discharging: When the switch is flipped to disconnect the battery and connect the capacitor to a load (such as an LED), the stored energy in the capacitor is released.
• LED Behavior: During discharging, the second LED lights up and gradually dims as the capacitor loses charge.

Procedure
1. Setup the Circuit:•Connect the positive terminal of the capacitor to the positive terminal of the battery via a resistor and a switch.
• Connect one LED in series to indicate the charging process.
• Connect the second LED in parallel to the capacitor with another switch to indicate the discharging process.
• Ensure all connections are secure and correct as per the circuit diagram.
2. Charging Process:• Close the first switch to connect the capacitor to the battery.
• Observe the red LED glowing brightly initially and then dimming as the capacitor charges fully.
3. Discharging Process:
• Open the first switch and close the second switch to connect the capacitor to the green LED.
• Observe the green LED glowing and then gradually dimming as the capacitor discharges.

Observations

Condition LED Behavior Voltage Across Capacitor
Charging LED glows and dims gradually Increases from 0V to 9V
Discharging LED glows and dims gradually Decreases from 9V to 0V

Conclusion

This project demonstrates the charging and discharging behavior of a capacitor. The gradual dimming of LEDs during both processes indicates the change in voltage across the capacitor. Capacitors play a crucial role in electronic circuits for energy storage, filtering, and timing applications.

Applications
1. Capacitors are used in power supply circuits for filtering and voltage regulation.
2. They are critical components in timing and oscillating circuits.
3. They are used in memory storage systems and signal coupling.
