I'll share my experience with you. I'm still a I'm a beginner, but I think my experience will help some of you who want to get started on a small budget (less than €200).
The first essential step, which will allow you to see if you're truly cut out for this activity, is the simulator. Why essential? Simply because piloting an FPV drone isn't something you can improvise, and you'll quickly realize this.
Personally, I used the most well-known simulator, Liftoff, which is paid, around €20, and is available on PS4/PS5/Xbox.
On this point, I'll give you a little feedback. Yes, it's faster and easier to train on a console, but the main drawback is that the console controller is nothing like a real remote control. On a PC, you can connect your radio directly, so the training is really close to reality. If I had to do it again, I'd go straight to the computer.
Now let's move on to the equipment. The first thing to buy is the remote control. This will be useful from the beginning for simulator training, but also later on. One of the most widely used models, and therefore the most present on the used market, is the FRSKY Taranis QX7. You can find it for around €70-80 on sites like Leboncoin or on specialized Facebook groups (LE BON COIN DU DRONE, Coincoin du FPV, or even Le groupe CULTURE FPV).
Personally, I bought a new radio on Banggood for €80, the FRSKY Taranis X9 Lite.
For this, you'll need a goggle, and the essential goggle to get started (and even continue a little later) is the Eachine EV800D for €74 on Banggood. It's also easily found secondhand; I personally bought it for €40 on LeBonCoin. Now that we have the radio and the goggles, we're missing the key piece: the drone!
To begin with, there's one ideal type of drone: the tinywhoop. It's a very small drone that looks almost like a toy, but behaves almost like a 5-inch drone. Once you've mastered this mini drone, you'll be ready to move on to a 5-inch drone.
But why a tinywhoop? Because it's small and sturdy, you can train indoors but also outdoors (without wind, of course). One of the most popular tinywhoops for beginners is the Happymodel Mobula6, which costs €89 from Banggood and comes with four batteries and a charger. I personally bought it for €60 on LeBonCoin in new condition.
Be careful when purchasing this Mobula6, make sure you get the FRSKY version if you're using a Taranis radio.
There are also complete packages, including a radio, goggles, and a drone, such as the Cetus FPV Kit from betaFPV for €136. This drone is also great for learning, and the kit works perfectly. However, if you want to progress in this discipline, the radio and goggles aren't great, and you'll have to invest in them again.
Now that you've mastered your tinywhoop, you can move up a gear: the 5-inch drone.
I'm personally at this stage of my progression.
In the 5-inch range, ideal for beginners, there are two models that stand out: the Nazgul5 V2 from iFlight, which costs €230 at Banggood with a receiver compatible with the FRSKY radio, and the Sector 5 V3 from HGLRC, also at €270 at Banggood.
These two models are renowned for being reliable, versatile, and, above all, well-configured from the outset, making them ready to fly. I'm personally thinking of getting a Nazgul5 V2 from iFlight.
