Hero of the Soviet Union Manshuk Zhiengalievna Mametova was born into a poor peasant family. While still an infant, her parents gave her up to be raised by another family, hoping to provide their daughter with a better life. Manshuk Mametova accomplished her heroic deed near the town of Nevel, and was later awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
