The Federal Government and some non-governmental organizations recently expressed concerns over harmful traditional practices against women and girls despite extant laws against such practices.

They attributed the increasing cases to delay by some state governments to adopt and implement the Child Rights Act and the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, delay in the prosecution of offenders, the culture of silence, among others.

A 2018 report by the Nigeria Demographic Health Survey shows an overall 20 percent of women aged 15-49 are survivors of Female Genital Mutilation.
The World Health Organisation, however, says FGM has no health benefits and it harms girls and women causing trauma, pain, bleeding, infections, vaginal fistula, and death in some cases.
