Fatty liver disease, medically known as hepatic steatosis, is a concerning condition characterized by the excessive accumulation of fat within the liver.
When left untreated, it can lead to inflammation and enlargement of the liver, triggering a cascade of health problems, including the development of abdominal adiposity.
In addition, fatty liver disease can be associated with high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney dysfunction, or an inflamed gallbladder.
Over time, progressive liver damage can occur, characterized by the formation of scar tissue known as fibrosis.
This fibrous tissue obstructs the ability of liver cells to effectively cleanse the bloodstream, resulting in the accumulation of toxins in various body tissues.
Alarmingly, more than twenty-five percent of adults worldwide deal with fatty liver disease, largely due to dietary choices.
A prominent contributor to this condition is the excessive consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils, such as margarine, cottonseed oil, corn oil, soybean oil, or canola oil. These oils promote inflammation of liver cells, impairing the normal digestion of fats.
In addition, an excess of sugary foods in the diet can exacerbate the problem, as these sugars are converted into free fatty acids that clog the liver.
Alcohol consumption also poses a substantial risk, as it activates specific genes that instruct the liver to store fat instead of burning it for energy.
In addition, high-fructose corn syrup, present in more than eighty percent of packaged foods, especially in items such as soft drinks, condiments, and fast foods, quickly turns into fat within the liver, contributing to the problem.
In rarer cases, certain medications, drugs, and viral infections can cause liver damage, leading to fat accumulation.
Notably, fatty liver disease often remains undetected in standard liver enzyme blood tests, allowing it to persist undetected for years until severe liver damage becomes apparent.
