Downgrading from Windows XP to Windows 3.1
Did someone say, upgrade fest? How about a downgrade fest instead?
All of this was possible thanks to Windows 95 adding the ability to easily downgrade/rollback to the previous installed Windows version through an "uninstaller".
This implementation was removed in Windows Vista, though the ability was readded in modern Windows (however with the catch of downgrading within the first 10 days after upgrade).
Downgrade path:
0:00 - Windows XP RTM
0:45 - Windows ME
1:20 - Windows 98
1:50 - Windows 95
2:13 - Windows 3.1
2:31 - Conclusion
Obstacles:
After downgrading from Windows ME, the 98 uninstaller won't find the files necessary for the downgrade to Windows 95 (01:32) - Workaround: Backing up the "W98undo.dat" and "W98undo.ini" files into a separate folder from the root directory of the system drive (C:\ in most cases). If the 98 uninstaller complains about "missing files", move both backed up files to the root directory of the system drive.
After downgrading from Windows 95, the system won't boot (02:06) - Workaround: Reinstalling MS-DOS. Afterwards, starting up Windows requires navigating into the Windows folder, prior to typing "win" in the DOS prompt.
