Have you ever considered how a second language could help you learn math? What if math weren't just thought about with the mind, but also with the hands, body, and gaze?

Mathematics is a living, cultural practice, shaped by bodies, languages, and the contexts in which it is embodied. In this talk, two teachers and researchers invite us to discover how mathematical concepts—such as number, relation, or transformation—are expressed and acquire meaning in Colombian Sign Language (LSC), where gesture also reasons and the gaze constructs knowledge.

The dialogue will be framed by three major theoretical frameworks: ethnomathematics, which recognizes cultural diversity as a source of knowledge and challenges the idea of a single valid way of doing math; the onto-semiotic approach, which invites us to legitimize our own practices when addressing mathematical phenomena; and the theory of semiotic representation registers, which explores how ideas are transformed into mental images and how these can be enriched from an intercultural and sign-based perspective.

However, aware that any theory is insufficient to encompass the diversity of human experiences, the researchers propose an intercultural dialogue that recovers forgotten stories—from global narratives to personal accounts—from which a fundamental question emerges: What do you see when you see?

This path invites us to explore our own ways of knowing, representing, and experiencing mathematics. Because imagining is also a way of doing science. And spaces for dissemination can be, above all, places where knowledge is built collectively.
