With a continued focus on the Ultimate Driving Machine - BMW has been challenged year-after-year, production-run after production-run to try to outpace the success of the E46 M3 at over 85,000 units sold worldwide. It's predecessor - the E36 M3 was at about 14,000 less and it's successor E9X M3? 20,000 less.
And this year, 2022, marks the M-division's 50th anniversary - and to this date - the E46 M3 remains the G.O.A.T. But it's not just sales figures that puts this legend at the top of the M3-food-chain. Below are just a few reasons why this generation of the M3 was a must-buy for car enthusiasts in the first place!
1 of 1: Race Car in a 3-piece Suit
The M Division stems from the 1M - BMW's first attempt at making a supercar - and then the E30 M3, which comes out of an obsessive racing rivalry with their German enemy - Mercedes - Benz. In that - they won. To sensationalize the M3, BMW added a tad of flair into the E36 and riding the momentum with a larger L6 engine, sales were enough to support the continuation of the M3 badge into… you guessed it! The E46 M3.
The straight-six, S54B32 is a dream of an engine. Singing it's acapella to near 8000 RPMs (or up to 8000 in tuned E46 M3s), with piston speeds that were rivaling that of formula 1 engines at the time. This muscular heart won eight different distinctions in the International Best Engine of the Year categories over it's production run of 2000-2006 and is considered to be the inspiration behind its turbocharged successors: N54/N55, B58/S58 engines that are in the modern day M-cars.
Mate that beating heart (with individual throttle bodies) to a 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential with wide rear tires covered by wide wheel arches.. and then zoom out to the whole body: The aggressive curves, the bulge on the hood, fender grills, sporty mirror covers. Center-oriented quad exhaust... it's German James Bond.
