Last year, we hosted the first annual Photography Ethics Symposium on the theme ‘Working with People' at the Royal Photographic Society House in Bristol. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are moving the event online. Instead of one all-day event, we are hosting a mini-series of events. This was the second of those panel events.

The aim of these events is to promote conversation and critical thought about ethics in photography. We aim to highlight issues which, we feel, are particularly relevant in today’s context, including the ethics of consent and power, representation and authority, and the subjectivity of photography.

On October 1, we heard from Laura Saunders and Smita Sharma on gender, power, and documenting vulnerability.

Our second panel took place on November 5. We heard from Melissa Bunni Elian and Martha Tadesse on representation, identity, and intersectional storytelling. This is the recording.

Our third panel panel will take place on December 3. We will hear from Jennie Ricketts and John Edwin Mason on objectivity, truth, and lies. You can register for that event here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/photog...

This session was organised by the Photography Ethics Centre, and moderated by Savannah Dodd.

This event was supported by the International Women’s Media Foundation’s Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists.
