Starter Motor Problem and Replacement in Honda Accord 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017. Video shows engine starter problems of Honda Accord, 4 cylinder, automatic transmission, and then step by step guide on how to replace starter motor.
SIGNS OF A STARTER GOING BAD / STARTER FAILURE:
When starter motor going bad and we try to start the vehicle there is full power in battery but starting motor (cranking motor) will have no crank at all: lights on instrument panel/ dash will stay steady (not flicker), headlights will have full power - won't dim or flicker.... car starter motor will simply not even try to start the vehicle. When this happens, turn the car key to off and then on and try to restart. After a few tries it will start. Starter solenoid ability degrades over time so problem will get worse and may eventually leave you stranded.

WHY THIS IS NOT ALTERNATOR PROBLEM:
When issue is with alternator (charging system) it would not charge the battery and as a result you will have battery problems. See: • How To Test Alternator & Battery - Easy
BATTERY PROBLEM Vs. STARTER PROBLEM:
When issue is with battery, the vehicle doesn't have enough power to start the vehicle. When we try to start, the lights on the dash / instrument panel / gauges will flicker, if we switch-on the headlights they will be dim (low lit) and if we try to start with headlights on, they will flicker while vehicle is trying to start, and we can hear starter trying to start vehicle.
IF YOU ARE STRANDED DUE TO STARTER PROBLEM:
Lift vehicle on scissor/jack on the driver side wheel
Take spare wheel from trunk, place under driver wheel
Take metal wrench meant for opening wheel lug nuts
Take floor mat from car, place under vehicle engine
Lay down on the floor mat under car engine
Find starter under vehicle, bang on it with wrench
Do this a few times and then start vehicle
When vehicle starts, do not turn it off!
BAD STARTER REPLACEMENT:
Starter Failure: cost to replace bad starter motor at Honda dealer service shop is about $850! ($550 for starter cost + $200 labor + tax etc) We can save by buying OEM Honda accord starter motor online and install it ourselves - its only 2 bolts and 2 wires.

HOW TO REPLACE THE STARTER:
Due to snug location of starter its wire connectors and bolts are not visible easily and most of the work has to be done by feeling the connectors and bolts by fingers! Therefore, please review video closely and note the steps below:
TO REMOVE OLD STARTER:
1) Put jack stands under front end of the car
2) Disconnect battery terminals, use 10mm socket
3) Lay down under vehicle and power-on work light
4) Disconnect starter wire harness from starter body
5) Wire Connector on Top: press on top-front, pull connector away from starter to disconnect
6) Wire Connector on back: pull-up rubber boot, loosen & remove 12mm nut
7) Locate upper 14mm bolt, loosen w/ ratchet & remove
8) Locate lower 14mm bolt, loosen & remove
9) Starter will be loose by now, wiggle and remove
TO INSTALL NEW STARTER
Installation is the reverse of above steps.
Be gentle in tightening nut in step (6) above
If 14mm bolt (step 7-8) is tight, local repair shop can loosen w/ their power tools

less than an hour
