Tulisa Contostavlos is a singer and songwriter from Camden Town, London, best known as the lead vocalist of N-Dubz alongside her cousin Dappy and their friend Fazer. After N-Dubz went on hiatus in 2011 and Tulisa joined the panel of The X Factor as the youngest judge in the show’s history, she launched her solo career with Young — a track she heard being developed for another artist in the studio and immediately claimed for herself. Released on 29 April 2012 through All Around The World and Island Records, Young debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart in its first week with sales of 121,000 copies, also topping the Scottish chart and reaching number five in Ireland, earning a BPI Gold certification. The track was written and produced by STL — a production duo formed by Fazer (Richard Rawson) and Danish producer Pete Ibsen, who had previously worked with Duffy, the Sugababes and Victoria Beckham. The video was filmed in Miami in February 2012, directed by Ben Peters, with a cameo from rapper Chip. Originally titled We Are Young, the title was shortened before release to avoid confusion with Fun’s single of the same name, which was climbing the UK charts at the same time.
