This documentary tells the story of a team of American divers who discovered a German submarine off the coast of New Jersey and the persistent efforts of two of their members, John Chatterton and Richie Kohler, to identify it. Chatterton and Kohler's team undertook extensive and painstaking work before they succeeded in establishing that the submarine they found was U-869. Kerson describes in detail, step by step, how Chatterton and Kohler attempted to unravel the mystery of the submarine's serial number, conducting numerous dives to the submarine, risking their lives, while simultaneously searching through archives, exchanging correspondence, and meeting with historians and U-boat veterans.
