Melville's Leviathan
The large sperm whale, which inhabited the coast of South America approximately 10-13 million years ago, gets its name from the biblical monster Leviathan and Herman Melville's surname. A sperm whale skull, approximately 3 meters long, was first discovered in the desert of Peru in 2008. This skull is three times larger than that of a modern killer whale. The skull of a modern blue whale is approximately 6 meters long, but unlike sperm whales, it is not a predator. Scientists estimate that Melville's Leviathan could have reached a length of 13-17.5 meters. It was one of the largest cetaceans in the history of the planet and one of the leading marine predators of its time.
