A set of three simple writing exercises involving a subjective study of creating memorable characters. First write down five characters from book, movie or play that stands out in your memory. Of the thousands of characters we read about and view think of the very few that have stayed in your mind or are most likely to come up in your memory. Set aside being the writer for these exercises, be the reader / viewer. Now with your list find the reasons why you chose the characters you did. Strange histories? Double life? Secrets? Duality of nature? Distinct accent? Write the reasons down. Think of the phenomena of a "memorable character." Why do we remember the few and forget the many? Reasons vary form one personality to the next. Now make a list of five people you have met who stick in your memory. Don't chose people for what effect they have had on you but for the who they are themselves. See them from afar. Now decide what is it about them that has given them a lasting place in your memory. Now take what you have learned and use it to create a totally fictional character. Don't copy but finding the underling structure of what has made the characters memorable.
