Testing the possibilities of Eevee Next, Blender’s real-time engine, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It’s impressive how you can achieve fairly clean images with just a few samples and without having to rely heavily on denoising systems. On top of that, it supports light volumetrics, optical effects like bloom, and depth of field—all in real time.
When it comes to materials, metals look pretty decent, and it’s also possible to work with dielectric materials using subsurface scattering. However, when I tested glass, the results were still far from convincing. Hopefully future versions will refine this area.
My plan is to keep exploring what Eevee can bring to the table—not as a replacement for Cycles, but as a complement. It could even become a solid option for generating clean volume passes that we can later bring into comp in Nuke.
If you’ve found a convincing way to create hyper-realistic glass in Eevee, let me know in the comments.
