Exploring how to read code
Today I show you guys how I read code.
Accordingly, to read code start with with the README.md for the desired repository of interest (we use GitHub in the example).
Then pick a file and jump in!
I start looking at the piece of code from top to bottom.
Most importantly, the goal is to understand what the code is doing as a whole, not necessarily what each piece of code does.
To achieve said goal, I break down the code into sections.
In our example, I focused on understanding the first function in the file.
Once I got the gist of it, I move on the next function etc.
Now, if the syntax feels very unfamiliar THEN it's a good idea to google search the syntax to get an understanding of what you're seeing.
In our video, you can see this example when I search the ":=" symbol in GO which takes the place of a variable key word.
If you don't get it right away that's fine! Reading code takes time, if you keep returning to the same file, eventually you'll start to get your "aha!" moments.
