A periscope is a nifty tool that allows you to see what's hidden from your direct line of sight. It works on the basic principle of reflection using mirrors. Here's how it works:
Mechanics:
A typical periscope is a tube with two mirrors placed at an angle of 45 degrees to each other, one at each end.
Light enters the top mirror and reflects downwards at a 45-degree angle.
The reflected light then strikes the bottom mirror at another 45-degree angle, reflecting it back upwards towards the viewer's eye positioned at the top end of the tube.
The outcome- An image of what's above the periscope is formed even though the observer is below it.
Use-
Submarines: Submarines use periscopes to see above the water while remaining submerged. This is crucial for navigation, target acquisition, and threat assessment.
Tanks and Armored Vehicles: Periscopes allow crews to see outside the vehicle without exposing themselves to enemy fire.
