Irenaeus of Lyons: Why Your Bible Has Four Gospels
In A.D. 177, the Christians of Lyons were tortured and executed in a Roman amphitheater. One priest survived because he was away in Rome. His name was Irenaeus. He returned, rebuilt the community, and wrote Adversus Haereses, the first great work of systematic theology, in which he argued that the Church had exactly four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
