Todd Phillips' Joker was released in 2019 to a mixed reception. Some hailed it for it's gritty telling of the story of DC super villain, Joker, while others criticised it for encouraging sympathy for mass murderers.

Despite being a well known villain in the Batman franchise, little was told about the backstory of the Joker and how came to be. In Batman (1989) and the Dark Knight, Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger's portrayal of the DC villain are similar. Both serve as the villain who disrupts the status quo. In Phoenix's portrayal of the Joker we learn more about his mental health issues and the events that significantly affected his life.
