CYBERPUNK 2077: What is Going on Down in Mexico? (Game Theories & Cyberpunk Lore—RE-EDITED)
*For lore on Sasha and her mother from the Cyberpunk Edgerunners Let You Down video, that incidentally comes up at 36:41. I've re-edited this to try and clean up some of the sound issues. I could only do so much, but I wanted to clean up some of the really noticeable sound flare-ups I missed last time. A huge thanks to all the people that watched/liked/subscibed to the original.
The Cyberpunk series has a deep longstanding backstory and 40 years of lore built up around it. Ever since the beginning, during the 80s, Cyberpunk's writers have been basing Cyberpunk's lore on real-world events as much as they could. In real life, one of the major events in the 90s was America partnering up with the Colombians to topple the operations of major drug cartels in Colombia and a lot of Latin America. In Cyberpunk, one of the major events in the lore was old America waging a war against the South American drug cartels that turned into full-blown invasions of both South and Central America and the Central American War.
Cyberpunk 2077 has taken the series 50 years ahead. And the lore has largely changed. I think what we see during the video game shows us that the drug cartels in Mexico have largely replaced the South American cartels in the series the same way they have in real life. I also think that megacorporations like Militech and Arasaka are largely ruining Mexico the same way they’re screwing up the NUS and the rest of the Cyberpunk universe. I also wouldn't be surprised if companies like Petrochem, SovOil, Biotechnica, and MetaCorp will also make appearances in Mexico later on in the series. If you follow the news that comes out of Mexico in real life, you know that some of these cartels are even more dangerous and more disturbing than a lot of the gangs in Cyberpunk. In fact, there are places in Mexico in real life that might even be more dangerous than Night City. And given how all this is so prominent in the media these days the way the Colombians were in the 80s, I wouldn’t be surprised if CDPR and R. Talsorian started incorporating more of these things into their lore. And based on what they've done with things like Haiti, China, and Kang Tao, this wouldn't be a first in the 77 entries.
This is the first time I've ever had a reason to even refer to real-world events. But if I'm being honest, I let this project go about a hundred different directions - so I didn't research said events until after I finished writing all this. I've obviously fact-checked everything since, but I did do most of it from memory to begin with. So if I got anything wrong or mixed around, feel free to tell me down below.
And if you’re wondering why I used Call of Duty footage in a Cyberpunk video, it’s because playing Modern Warfare II again is partly what inspired me to make these theories into a video. The Los Almas chapters were some of the best parts of that whole campaign. And this is probably as close as I’ll ever get to making theories about Call of Duty.
