Are aliens really out there somewhere? While a lot of people think they know the answer, the most interesting perspective may actually come from the scientists who just aren’t sure.

Since the first reports of “flying saucers” in 1947, there have been 170,000 sightings of mysterious objects in the sky. On top of that, there have also been sensational claims of abductions, crop circles, crashed spacecraft … even alien bodies.

But while some accounts are more intriguing than others, they all have one thing in common: A lack of hard evidence. Photographs are blurry, videos inconclusive, sightings explainable as misidentifications … and that’s putting aside the confirmed hoaxes.

But even if Earth’s skies aren’t buzzing with alien spacecraft that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re alone in the universe.

For decades, scientists have been trying to figure out what conditions are necessary for life to arise and how we might detect it. And while that used to be almost entirely a matter of guesswork, new discoveries are bringing us closer to an answer than ever.
