Need of Armoured Fighting Vehicle

Infantry fighting vehicles have a very important role in military operations since World War I. At the tough terrains of LAC, Indian needs light, fast armored mobility to better itself than the Chinese counterpart. It needs to strike quick & hard and move. This is where the need to Armored Fighting vehicle is felt the most. At present Indian Army is operating the Soviet Era BMPs and APCs which are in need of desperate replacement with the changing battle scenario. This is where the TATA Kestrel or WhAP(Wheeled Armoured Platform) proves to be vital. Indian Army needs close to 2000 such vehicle to replace its fleet of BMPs.

Tata Whap Induction

As per the latest reports, The Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) on Tuesday handed over the first lot of the indigenously developed Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicles (IPMVs) to Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Naravane at a ceremony in Pune on Tuesday, becoming the first private sector company in the country to produce and deliver wheeled armoured combat-ready vehicles for the armed forces. In addition to supply, TASL will also provide 24x7 support to maintain the vehicles at the deployment locations.

The vehicles inducted include quick reaction fighting vehicle medium, infantry protected mobility vehicle, ultra long range observation system developed by the TASL and monocoque hull multi-role mine protected armoured vehicle developed by Bharat Forge. In the images released by Indian Army we could see 3 Whap in the induction ceremony, however the serial number on one of the Whap is IPMV06 which means 6 of such IPMVs have been produced by TASL.

Stringent field trials

The induction of the Tata Whap has not been easy as the IPMV has undergone stringent field trials in deserts as well as high altitude areas. The IPMV also include TASL’s in-house designed and developed remote-controlled weapon station with thermal sights from Tonbo Imaging and external add-on armour protection panels developed by the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory of the DRDO.
