Nijmegen, the Netherlands to Düsseldorf via Kleve in Germany Best Alternative Route (Bus & Train)
Looking for an easy alternative route from the Netherlands to Germany? In this trip report, I’ll show you how to travel from Nijmegen (NL) to Düsseldorf (DE) via Kleve, using a bus and regional train. This hidden gem of a connection is especially useful during train disruptions from Arnhem or Venlo due to construction work!
📍 Route Details:
✅ Bus from Nijmegen (Netherlands) to Kleve (Germany) (Bus line SB 56)
✅ Regional train from Kleve to Düsseldorf (Regional train RE 10)
This route offers a smooth, scenic, and cost-effective alternative for cross-border travel. Plus, it’s great for commuters, day-trippers, and travelers looking for an easy way to get from the Netherlands to Germany without relying on direct trains where there will be a lot of track work on the routes from Arnhem and Venlo due to (great) improvements on the railway line until mid 2026.
Also the regional train Hengelo - Osnabrück - Bielefeld might be impacted during some days on the section Rheine - Osnabrück.
The regional trains from Enschede are also a good choice during some of the construction works.
