Today I present the carpet "Lazy Jacquard". Rectangular carpets knitted using the jacquard technique are gaining more and more popularity. You can find many photos, diagrams and master classes on such carpets on the Internet. Most of these carpets are knitted using the so-called "no broaches" method. This means that you always have 2 (or more) cords of different colors in your work, and you need to knit first one, then the other color. This is not very convenient for me, because the cords twist strongly between themselves in the process. In addition, there is a large consumption of cord, because both cords are involved in knitting each row. And then I remembered that as a child I knitted blouses using the “lazy jacquard” technique, but I knitted them with knitting needles. Unfortunately, the photos of those blouses have not survived, but you can find similar items on the Internet.
I dug through my archives and found a notebook that I started back in August 1987, i.e. 30 years ago! Here I collected recipes, patterns, magazine clippings - remember, there was a magazine called “Rabotnitsa”? - here are the clippings from there. And here were several patterns of that very “lazy jacquard”. Its secret is that you always knit only one color: two rows (front and back) are knitted in one color, then the next 2 rows (front and back) - in the second color. We change the cord only at the end of the row, and the whole row you work with only 1 cord. This makes knitting much easier. To get a pattern when crocheting, you need to alternate sc and dc. On the wrong side, we knit all the loops sc, i.e. we simply return the cord to the beginning of the row. Therefore, in the pattern, 1 row of cells = two knitted rows: front + back.
In fairness, it should be noted that I am not the first who figured out how to use "lazy jacquard" patterns when crocheting. There are already examples of such use on the Internet. But there are differences.
1. Here, the fabric is knitted only with front rows and at the end of each row, the thread is cut off, and at the beginning of the next, a new one is added. Thus, an original fringe is obtained along the edges. In the case of a cord, this is not very convenient. In my opinion, fringe from a cord is not very neat. Yes, and it is a pity to cut the cord so often.
2. Here, the purl rows are knitted more difficultly. When I tried to knit like this, I endlessly got confused and the pattern went astray. In my version, I repeat, the purl rows are knitted with sc all loops in a row.
Another important point for lazy people like me: in the pattern, it is not necessary to calculate the total number of loops in a row, i.e. the number of loops does not depend on the length of the rapport. The patterns are composed in such a way that it can start with any loop and end anywhere. The length of the initial chain is affected only by the width or length of the finished carpet, i.e. you dial a chain of air loops of the length that you have planned for the size of the carpet. And it does not matter whether this number of loops is a multiple of some number or not. You can use different patterns throughout the carpet, and it also does not matter how many loops are involved in the rapport of each of the patterns.
I can't stand these calculations and always get confused in them. It is easier for me to knit and unravel 5 times than to first calculate everything on paper.
The only calculation you will need here is to calculate the amount of cord for a carpet of the required size. When I was knitting these patterns, I could not switch to correctly perceive the pattern diagram as a crochet pattern. Therefore, I made notes for myself. These are very working, rough materials, i.e. for myself. Here I converted the loops into columns. If you also find it more convenient to use such diagrams, I will prepare them in electronic form and post them on my website. Write to me about it in the comments.
Well, now attention, a question: are you interested in the topic of "lazy jacquard crochet"? Do you want to knit such a carpet? In the upper right corner of the video there are buttons with answer options, choose your answer there. Or you can just leave a like. If this video gets 500 likes, then I will shoot a master class on knitting using the "lazy jacquard crochet" technique.
Waiting for your comments and likes!
