Lost Planet takes place in the year known in the game as T.S. -80 on the fictional planet E.D.N. III. With conditions on Earth rendered uninhabitable by war, global warming, and pollution, a fictional interstellar megacorporation called Neo-Venus Construction (NEVEC) plans to colonize E.D.N. III, an Earth-like exoplanet experiencing an ice age. NEVEC discovers that E.D.N. III is inhabited by aggressive and territorial insectoid creatures called Akrids. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and accumulate thermal energy. Set 150 years after a great war in which humans lost to the Akrids, the game's plot revolves around soldier Wayne Holden, who attempts to overthrow NEVEC, which is still fighting for control of E.D.N. III, and help in colonizing the planet with the remaining part of the human race, destroy the Akrids, trying to survive in conditions of betrayal and extreme conditions of the planet.
