APQP Phase 2 - Product Design & Development | Design for Success
PLANNING AND DEFINING PROGRAM
The Product Design and Development phase is all about turning ideas and customer requirements into tangible product designs. It's an exhilarating stage, and it's where the magic truly happens.
This phase involves the key steps: 1) Conceptualization and Ideation, 2) Feasibility Assessment 3) Concept Selection, 4) Detailed Design, 5) Design Review, 6) Testing and Validation, 7) Iterative Improvement, and 8) Final Design Freeze.
STEP 1 - Conceptualization and Ideation
The first step in this phase is all about generating ideas and concepts. We brainstorm and explore various possibilities that align with customer needs and preferences. It's an exciting phase that encourages creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.
STEP 2 - Feasibility Assessment
While creativity is essential, we must also ensure that our ideas are feasible. This step involves conducting a feasibility assessment to determine whether our concepts are technically, economically, and practically viable.
STEP 3 - Concept Selection
With a pool of ideas in hand, we move on to selecting the most promising concept. This decision is based on a combination of factors, including customer feedback, technical feasibility, market trends, and business goals.
STEP 4 - Detailed Design
Once we have our chosen concept, it's time to delve into the nitty-gritty of the detailed design. This step involves creating comprehensive blueprints, specifications, and prototypes to bring the concept to life on paper.
STEP 5 - Design Review
Design reviews are essential to ensure that our product meets all requirements and expectations. We conduct thorough reviews with input from various stakeholders to refine and improve the design further.
STEP 6 - Testing and Validation
A crucial aspect of product design is testing and validation. We rigorously test prototypes to ensure they meet quality and performance standards. This step helps us identify and address any design flaws early in the process.
STEP 7 - Iterative Improvement
The product design and development process are often iterative. We continuously seek feedback, make improvements, and refine the design until we achieve an optimal and market-ready product.
STEP 8 - Final Design Freeze
Once we have thoroughly validated and refined the design, we reach the "Final Design Freeze" stage. At this point, we freeze the design to proceed with the next phases of the APQP process.
CONCLUSION
From generating ideas to freezing the final design, this phase is crucial to creating innovative and customer-centric products.
