The cerebellum coordinates movement and balance, so nurses test cerebellar function during neuro exams. Finger-to-nose testing evaluates coordination of extremities by having the patient touch their nose with eyes open and closed. Rapid alternating movement assesses dysdiadochokinesia and irregular or slow movements indicate dysfunction. Gait testing looks for ataxia - unsteady, staggering steps. Heel-to-shin evaluates coordination as the patient slides the heel of one foot down the shin of the other leg. Abnormal cerebellar tests indicate potential neurological conditions requiring further assessment.
