This is the forgotten story of John Deere’s legendary 1980s skidders — the rugged cable and grapple machines that built the modern North American logging industry long before touchscreen forestry equipment existed. From the compact John Deere 440C to the massive John Deere 648D, these machines hauled timber through mud, snow, mountains, and impossible terrain while surviving decades of abuse. Many are still working today, forty years later.
