Pilot hole and countersink before you screw in a screw!
Here I show you the importance of drilling a pilot hole and then countersinking, especially when screwing a dry piece of softwood to something else (e.g. a bed slat to the frame, or a floorboard). Be careful to use a drill slightly smaller than the body of the screw and don't screw deeper than the screw will go in.
