Fire is an important element in helping certain native plants survive and thrive. Natural resource organizations often use prescribed burns to maintain prairie ecosystems. But what happens when these habitats are located in urban areas? Clint Brooks of Mecklenburg County Natural Resources discusses the unique challenges and safety requirements for prescribed fires in Charlotte’s urban setting.
The Charlotte region is home to the Southern Piedmont Chapter of the North Carolina Native Plant Society. Our mission is to promote the enjoyment and conservation of North Carolina’s native plants and their habitats through education, protection, promulgation and advocacy.

The Southern Piedmont Chapter meets the second Sunday of most months during the year. Our meetings are both virtual and in-person open to the public as well as members-only hikes and other events.
