The best habit I have ever acquired is the daily reading habit of non-fiction books. Four years ago I committed to reading an hour a day of material that inspires and teaches. There is no way I would be where I am today without reading. Books have given me a roadmap for how to live a good life. A year ago I made a critical decision to start reading more biographies. On the surface these seemed very boring and I wasn’t really attracted to them. What fun could I have from reading a dry 600 page book on Benjamin Franklin? But I decided to partake anyways and I was blown away by the results.
The exciting thing is that all of the most successful and influential men and women of the past few thousand years have either written books themselves, or someone has written biographies about them. This means we have in-depth stories of the most inspiring people of all time. All we have to do is open a book and experience their fascinating lives. The problem is that most people don’t read whatsoever. The average American reads less than one non-fiction book a year. If you could learn to live the life of your dreams would you overcome the small amount of inertia required to read a book?
